Global copper consumption has doubled over the past two decades—and with accelerating demand from clean energy, electric vehicles, and digital infrastructure, it is projected to continue rising sharply in the years ahead.
Copper production involves four key stages: ore extraction, beneficiation into concentrate, smelting, and electrolytic refining to produce high-purity copper cathodes. ESNAA employs Metso’s advanced Side-Blown and Bottom-Blown Furnace (SBF & BBF) technologies to achieve high metal recovery, energy efficiency, and reduced emissions throughout the smelting process.
To ensure security of supply and full control over the value chain, ESNAA is partnering with trusted associates to operate open-pit and underground copper mines in regions such as South Africa, the DRC, Brazil, Mexico, and Finland—directly sourcing high-grade copper concentrate for its UAE-based refinery.

At ESNAA, securing a consistent, high-quality copper supply begins with strategic exploration and responsible resource development across key global regions.
Processing of Copper Ore – Extracting the Essential Copper Concentrate
Once copper ore is extracted from the mine, the first step is to break down large rock formations into smaller, manageable pieces. This is followed by a series of crushing, grinding, and flotation processes designed to separate and concentrate the copper content. The result is a high-grade copper concentrate, which serves as the critical feedstock for ESNAA’s advanced smelting and refining operations.
Smelting & Recycling at ESNAA Dubai
At ESNAA’s Dubai facility, the next phase in the process involves smelting copper sulfide concentrate using advanced Side-Blown and Bottom-Blown Furnace (SBF & BBF) technologies, ensuring high efficiency and reduced emissions. For oxide ores, solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX/EW) techniques are applied to recover copper from leach solutions. This integrated approach allows ESNAA to process both primary and secondary materials—including recycled copper—supporting circular economy goals and maximizing metal recovery.
